James Nottingham is regarded by many as one of the most engaging and thought-provoking presenters in the world of education. He is the author of ten books and developed the concept of the Learning Pit. Learning occurs when you step out of your comfort zone. And yet, many people are hesitant to take this step for fear of making mistakes or revealing their weaknesses. That’s when the Learning Pit can help: to encourage and reassure learners that taking risks, asking questions, and trying new things can help them develop their abilities and deepen their understanding.
We talked about:
1) The importance of creating opportunities for “cognitive conflict?” with your students.
2) The role of metacognition and self-reflection
3) The importance of adopting a “growth mindset.”
I was left profoundly impacted by my conversation with James. He talked honestly about his experiences at school and why he found it so challenging. He reminded me of the primary role of teachers; to connect and engage with students. James is an incredible communicator and I hope that you get as much out of this episode as I did. I truly believe this conversation with James can, and will, transform your teaching.
