In this episode, we are talking with then wonderful Professor Julie Schmidt Hasson. She has spent many years in the classroom and as a school leader and principal. More recently she has been trying to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which teachers influence our lives. Julie believes that “Growth and transformation happen when people feel safe, seen, and stretched… just as we did in the classrooms of our favourite teachers.” As a qualitative researcher, Julie has interviewed hundreds of people about the teachers they remember. The synthesis of that research became the Chalk and Chances project, which I founded in 2018. In her words, if it wasn’t for her herMr beloved teacher Mrs. Russell “who knows where I would be right now.”
We all have that teacher, the one that changed our lives. Teachers are the unsung heroes who quite often have no ideas of the impact that they have had on their students.
I hope that you enjoy this discussion with Julie and, if you haven’t done so yet, please reach out to that teacher that made a difference in your life and say “thank you.”

Today I have a very special episode to share with you. Keishia Thorpe is the winner of the 2022 Global Teacher Prize. Keishia fled poverty and violence as a child from Jamaica, and encountered racism as a black immigrant in the US where she had come on a track and field scholarship.
Her commitment to mentoring students - all immigrants themselves - and helping them find paths to higher education saw her named National Life Group’s ‘Lifechanger of the Year’ Grand Prize Winner for the 2018-2019 School Year. She has dedicated herself to mentoring college applicants and student-athletes, as well as expanding access to subsidised testing, financial aid, and full scholarships.
We talked about:
How she overcame unthinkable obstacles to become the most recognised teacher in the world
Why teachers need to share their stories, trials and victories
The importance of representation and why it matters so much
The power of determination and vision and how to instil this in young people
Keishia was a wonderful guest and it was an incredible privilege to speak with her.

This week’s episode is a really special one. We all have that teacher that changed our lives, the one that saw us, the one that believed in us and the teacher that took the time to get to know us. Today, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Mrs Taylor-Jones, my Year 3 teacher from Long Row Primary School in Belper, England. I vividly remember being in her class. 1993 was a particularly rough period in my life; my family had just separately and I felt so alone. Her classroom was a safe place for me, a place where anything was possible. I LOVED her class, and this set me on a teaching career path.
To be honest, I am sure that everyone in that class and the many classes since felt the same way. If you get a chance, reach out and thank your teacher, they may never know the difference that they made in your life.
