Richard Ingersoll is the leading expert on America’s teaching force. He examines teaching as a job, teachers as employees, and schools as workplaces. He frequently presents information to policymakers at the national, state, and local levels.
Richard’s research is internationally recognised; he was cited by President Clinton in a number of speeches announcing his teacher recruitment and training initiatives, and President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
He has published over 100 articles, reports, chapters, and essays on topics such as the management and organization of schools; accountability and control in schools; and teacher supply, demand, shortages, and turnover.
In this wide-ranging discussion, we talked about many things, including:
- Why authors John Goldsworthy and Kingsley William Amis have had such an impact on his life.
- Why he believes that there isn’t a teacher shortage in America, rather it is a retention and turnover issue.
- The importance of challenging convention and assumptions with empirical and quantifiable data.
- The role of management, organizational and school culture
Professor Ingersol was a delight to interview and his body and scope of works are simply breathtaking. I hope that you get as much out of this discussion that I did.

James Nottingham is regarded by many as one of the most engaging and thought-provoking presenters in the world of education. He is the author of ten books and developed the concept of the Learning Pit. Learning occurs when you step out of your comfort zone. And yet, many people are hesitant to take this step for fear of making mistakes or revealing their weaknesses. That’s when the Learning Pit can help: to encourage and reassure learners that taking risks, asking questions, and trying new things can help them develop their abilities and deepen their understanding.
We talked about:
1) The importance of creating opportunities for “cognitive conflict?” with your students.
2) The role of metacognition and self-reflection
3) The importance of adopting a “growth mindset.”
I was left profoundly impacted by my conversation with James. He talked honestly about his experiences at school and why he found it so challenging. He reminded me of the primary role of teachers; to connect and engage with students. James is an incredible communicator and I hope that you get as much out of this episode as I did. I truly believe this conversation with James can, and will, transform your teaching.

Professor Stephen Dinham is so well known in the Australian educational landscape that he almost needs no introduction. For those that need a brief recap, his experience in education and school leadership research is simply mind-boggling. In 2007 he was appointed to the position of Research Director of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership at the Australian Council for Educational Research. He took up his present position at the University of Melbourne at the beginning of 2011. He is currently a member of the Victorian Minister for Education Expert Panel for Schools.
In this episode we talked about:
- His doctoral research was centered around “teacher satisfaction and dissatisfaction, resignation and persistence.
- The link between leadership and teaching on student achievement
- His thoughts on the changing role school principals
- His work titled “Students are not hard-wired to learn in different ways – we need to stop using unproven, harmful methods” and why we need a different approach to teaching
Stephen’s work has had a huge impact on me and it was a privilege to sit in some of his classes during my Master's studies at the University of Melbourne.

Richard Gerver is an amazing individual. Every time I talk with him I feel inspired and challenged. In this episode, he talks about a dinner conversation with the late Ken Robinson and his wife and getting to talk privately with President Barack Obama.
There are moments in all of our lives when we realise that we can either continue to do what we have always done or, make a difficult decision to change - I am so grateful that Richard chose the second option.

Dr. Beghetto is an internationally recognized expert on creative thought and action in educational settings. He explains why all students need to be creative thinkers and asks if creativity is a generic skill, and how – or if – we should assess it in schools. Dr Beghetto’s research explores:
- the role uncertainty and creative risk-taking plays in creative expression, creative teaching & learning, and creative identity development
- how making principled changes to existing teaching, learning, and leadership practices can result in more creative, productive and sustainable educational contributions
- how to support teachers and young people in making positive and lasting contributions to learning and lives of others; and
- the development of more dynamic methods for studying creative expression in and beyond educational contexts.
Dr. Beghetto earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Indiana University (with an emphasis in Learning, Cognition and Instruction). It was so great to finally speak with him. I hope that you enjoy this fascinating conversation.
